The Fish Report, June 2010

Hello Long Beach Charters Friends and Supporters:

Lots of big Halibut and Salmon showing up already this season. 30 lbs Chinooks are being caught frequently this June and July..... this year Ucluelet's first Salmon Ladder Derby has already paid out $10,000 in cash prizes for the month of June. Our very own Mike Marriott placed second.

Weigh in closed at 10 pm on June 30^th. Mike knew this would be first and only chance this season to contend for a winning fish. He said “I know I will regret it If I don't try.” Mike had just finished talking with his wife on the phone at 8:30 pm. She said her and her daughter had just prayed for daddy to catch a big fish... “after turning my head from the rods to place the phone on the dash, I looked back and the port rod had just went off! . Quickly grabbing the rod I managed to get the line tight and felt an unusual amount of dead resistance... 'Halibut!?... If not I've got a contender , either way Thank you God!'  After 10 minutes of steady pull, the fish surfaced with a flash of chrome confirmed I indeed had a contender for the 35 pound leader. It took another ten minutes of concentrated effort before I could net it.” At 9:30 pm, weigh in was 31 pds. 8 oz, winning 2nd place and placement in the September 11 & 12 fish off for cash prizes of up to $30 000!

The ladder derby now continues through July and August , each month paying out a total $10 000 to the top 4 fish. Go to www.uclueletsalmonladderderby.com for more information on the derby.

Currently our guest Kjell S is in second place for the month of July with his 30 lbs 15 oz Tyee .

Halibut this last week have been larger then average for this time of the year. July 10^th, Jordan S. caught a 50 lbs Halibut and the day before Richard caught a 45 pounder.
