Port Alberni Sockeye Fishing

In Port Alberni, B.C sockeye fishing is essential part of our community and has grown significantly over the past 20 years. Sockeye are the distinctively red coloured salmon that are very desirable. These fish have brought tourists year after year to see them spawn up the many rivers of Port Alberni. At one time the Sockeye salmon was rarely sought after by Sport fisherman and was only fished by Commercial fisherman, but over the years it has become a main source for Sport and Charter fishing. Port Alberni has become one of the biggest spawning grounds on the island clocking in at over one million Salmon every year at the spawning grounds. This has improved both commercial and Sport fishing for Port Alberni.

This beautiful Sockeye Salmon live around four years and will return to its hatching grounds at the end of there lives. This run usually takes place around June and July, During this run it is not unheard of the hook over 25 sockeye a morning! In recent years the sockeye runs in Port Alberni have been enormous, even record breaking. The fishing has been so great, in fact, that fishing in early months and even the later months is still a viable option for a spectacular fishing experience. Port Alberni has been called the salmon capital of the world for a reason!
